Voted for the District’s Award-winning Racial Equity Policy 2260.03 Engaged a National Expert to train the Superintendent and Board on implicit bias
Voted to have the half-cent tax referendum placed on the ballot to help improve school buildings Unanimously passed Supplier Diversity amended policy 6320.02 mandating the use of more minority and small businesses in construction projects. HCPS is now paying over $1M to small Black Businesses in Hillsborough.
Unanimously passed amended Student Nutrition policy 8500 that mandated all students receive a hot lunch regardless of account balance.
Unanimously passed my Social Justice Resolution whereby affirming the School Board’s commitment to ensuring social justice for Black and marginalized students.
Supported the removal of offensive mascots from schools Unanimously passed my amended policy 2900(B) mandating all mascots, etc respect cultural differences, and values.
Unanimously passed my request to change the Discipline policy to a “Behavior Management Plan” as step one in transitioning from punitive to restorative practices.
Proposed a moratorium on the suspension of students in grades K – 2 in which Black students are overrepresented.
Successfully advocated in changing Student Fair Day to Family Fair day, effectively helping to reduce the number of ejections which disproportionately affected Black students.
Held the Superintendent accountable to the disproportionality in suspensions of Black male ESE students. Served as Chair of the Board 2018-2019
Hosted the annual East Tampa Career Fair to introduce our community to the Hillsborough Technical Colleges, apprenticeship programs, and other career opportunities.
Hosted a Family Empowerment conference to help disengaged parents learn how to effectively advocate for their students and navigate the system.
Approved tens of millions of dollars in capital improvements for District 5 schools including air conditioning, lighting, paint, roofs, safety & security, and classroom technology.
Approved pay increases for teachers and staff (bus drivers, student nutrition, maintenance, etc)
Successfully advocated to equalize teacher pay checks Encouraged the Superintendent to allow our blue-collar works to have free tuition at the Hillsborough Technical Colleges to help provide better career opportunities.
Supported the centralization of custodians over privatizing.
Supported expansion of Career Technical Education in Hillsborough.
District’s first-ever LGBTQ (Pride month) proclamation as well as the District’s LGBTQ Resource guide.
Voted to keep guns out of the classroom and in the hands of school resource officers only.
Worked with many business partners, community leaders, and fraternities/sororities in helping to fill the gaps in our schools.
Supported the plan to integrate Puerto Rican families seamlessly into HCPS following the devastation caused by hurricane Maria AND MUCH MORE….
