Tammy Shamburger currently serves as a member of the Hillsborough County School Board. In 2016 she was elected to the Board, representing District 5, the urban core of Hillsborough County. As only the third Black elected to the Hillsborough County School Board, Tammy represents primarily Black, Hispanic, low-income, and high-needs communities. She enthusiastically serves all student. She is one of seven board members responsible for making policy decisions and overseeing a total budget of $3.3 billion for the 7th largest school district in the nation with over 215,000 students; also the county’s largest employer with more than 24,000 employees.
Tammy’s focus on the School Board is ensuring all students have access to excellent educational opportunities. Equity is her priority. In 2019, under Tammy’s leadership as Chair of the Board, the Hillsborough School Board received the Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) School Board Excellence award which was awarded to only one Board in the nation. In 2018, under Tammy’s leadership as vice-chair, Hillsborough School Board received the National School Board Association’s Recognizing Innovative Strategies in Equity (RISE) award, for the implementation of one of the nation’s first Racial Equity policies. Tammy has been instrumental in rooting out long-standing systemic and institutional racism in Hillsborough County Schools.
Tammy is passionate about student achievement. Tammy also serves as the Chair of the Florida School Boards Association Equity Committee. In addition, she serves on the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County Executive Board, Hillsborough Education Foundation Executive Board, the Hillsborough County Department of Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee.
Tammy enjoys being an advocate for students and their families as well as the community. Tammy participates in several community organizations whose missions are to strengthen the community.
Tammy is a proud Tampa native. She is the product of Hillsborough County Public Schools and is a proud graduate of Bloomingdale Senior High School. Tammy has a Liberal Arts degree from Hillsborough Community College; Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of South Florida; and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from St. Leo University.
She is the proud mother of one daughter, J'kera.
